DA upbeat after global event puts PH pineapple, abaca in spotlight

The Philippines sees brighter prospects for its pineapple and abaca products following their successful showcase at the Food and Agriculture Organization’s World Food Forum 2026 in Italy, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Sunday. Featured during a special session, these local materials took center stage as students and international designers explored how agricultural resources can be turned into innovative, sustainable materials for fashion and the bioeconomy.

Students from John Cabot University and Coloriage Fashion School presented creative designs using sustainable materials from around the world, including Philippine pineapple and abaca fibers. The event brought together global partners to demonstrate how such natural resources can drive circular design and open new doors for local producers.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized that expanding overseas markets for these high-value products is essential to boost farmers’ incomes and support rural development. He noted that connecting Philippine agricultural goods with international industries unlocks greater value from local resources and strengthens the country’s standing in fast-growing sustainable markets. Linking homegrown resources to sectors like sustainable fashion creates fresh demand, builds stronger supply chains, and ensures more opportunities reach farming communities, he added.

The showcase also highlighted how traditional fibers can evolve into high-value, globally competitive materials while supporting resource efficiency and eco-friendly practices. Through such international initiatives, the country is turning its rich agricultural heritage into marketable innovations, broadening export avenues, and paving the way for inclusive, lasting growth in rural communities.
