Smart SIM registration now 17 percent complete

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has registered 17 percent or 12.6 million subscriber identity modules (SIM) of an estimated 73 million mobile subscribers as of latest count, the telecommunications firm said on Wednesday.

The latest count represents the successful registration of 11,693,436 prepaid SIM cards and another 915,205 postpaid registrants that have been accounted for under the ongoing SIM registration process.

“As of 9am Wednesday, January 25, Smart and TNT assisted SIM Registration booths are now operating in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; in Moalboal, Cebu; in Palo, Leyte; Pangantucan, Bukidnon; and in Malalag, Davao del Sur. Smart and TNT personnel in the booths are also providing a priority lane for seniors, for persons with disabilities, and for those using basic phones, making SIM Registration as inclusive as possible,” the telco reported.

Mobile phone subscribers have only up to April 26 this year to have their mobile phone cards registered as mandated by the SIM Registration Act or Republic Act 11934.

Smart has set up so-called assisted SIM registry booths to help speed up the process in areas where people use only the basic no-camera phones instead of smart mobile ones. The registration requires subscribers to taka picture not only of their identification cards but their own faces to complete the process.
