YGC unit installing solar rooftop facility in Mindanao

Petro Green Energy Corp. (PGEC), the listed renewable energy unit of Petro Energy Resources Corp. (PERC), has partnered with Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MMCM) for the installation of a 360 kilowatt peak (kWp) solar rooftop facility on campus.

Under the agreement signed Tuesday, PGEC committed to install 600 units of 600 watts solar panels from the manufacturer, Canadian Solar.

Francisco Delfin Jr., PGEC president and chief executive officer, said the solar installation aims to encourage students not just at MMCM but across Mindanao to specialize in energy science, engineering and environment-related courses.

“The journey towards a net-zero society requires efforts big and small. Though this 360 kWp rooftop solar project is very modest in terms of PGEC’s renewable energy portfolio, it demonstrates the Yuchengco Group of Companies’ synergy in responding to tasks for a net-zero future,” Delfin said.

According to PGEC, the facility is seen completed by the second quarter this year and will result in a 36 percent annual reduction in MMCM’s electricity cost over a period of 25 years.

The rooftop installation is the first renewable energy project in Mindanao and second such project following the first successful installation in Binondo, Manila in 2021.

“The groundbreaking collaboration between Mapúa MCM and PGEC on the solar rooftop project reflects Mapúa MCM’s dedication to sustainable development and incorporating green technology into education. Not only does it promote the use of renewable energy but it also serves as an educational resource for our students, demonstrating our commitment to innovative and socially responsible learning,” said Dodjie Maestrecampo, MMCM president and chief executive officer.

Some of PGEC’s other investments include the 32-megawatt Maibarara geothermal project in Batangas; the 50-MW Nabas wind power project in Aklan and the 70-MW Tarlac solar power project.

Recent PERC expansions include the incorporation of Rizal Green Energy Corp. which will develop solar projects in Bohol, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan and Isabela.

PGEC also acquired three new offshore wind blocks from the Department of Energy last year, covering offshore northern Luzon, northern Mindoro and eastern Panay.

PGEC and MMCM are members of the Yuchengco Group of Companies.
