The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday said it completed the project expanding the bike lane infrastructure in historic Intramuros, Manila.
Transportation Assistant Secretary for road transport non-infrastructure Jose Lim IV said the expanded bike lanes will benefit such stakeholders as tourists, students, persons with disabilities, residents, among many others.
“These bike lanes stand to benefit 1.9 million cyclists, tourists, students and other stakeholders,” Lim said.
The DOTr launched in March this year the 9.6-kilometer expanded bike lane program important in helping attract tourists to the Intramuros, especially its guided tours using bicycles.
“The Active Transport project here in Intramuros has become unique because tourists are offered guided tours around the historical landmarks while riding bicycles,” he said.
In partnership with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) and the Intramuros Administration, the active transport infrastructure project includes pedestrian walkways with PWD-accessibility ramps, open spaces and the construction of four public transport stops.
The Intramuros bike lanes are part of the 2,400 kilometers of bike lanes to be established by the DOTr by year 2028.
