NPC inaugurates power facilities in Cagayan

The National Power Corp. (NPC) has inaugurated new power facilities in Cagayan seen boosting reliability and power dispatch as well as widen its renewable energy resources.

Some of the projects launched in the region include the 69-kiloVolt San Miguel to Viga transmission line, the 5-megavolt amperes Viga substation and the 30-kilowatt Palumbanes Island solar photovoltaic (PV) diesel hybrid system.

Rene Barruela, NPC vice president for Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG), said the 23-circuit kilometer transmission line and the new substation will enhance the delivery of electricity in the northern part of the province.

“Equipped with the latest technology, the Viga substation will significantly boost the grid’s capacity and pave the way for new power resources,” Barruela said.

The NPC official said this development will also improve the province’s resilience against power disruptions and accommodate future growth in energy demand.

Also, the NPC said the 30- kW Palumbanes Island solar PV-diesel hybrid system offers a sustainable energy solution for over 200 households in the off-grid area and lower the island’s dependence on diesel and gradually cut fuel costs.

Rogel Teves, NPC vice president for power engineering services, said other renewable energy-hybrid projects in the pipeline include Rapu-rapu in Albay, Palanan in Isabela and Cuaming in Bohol.

“We aim to also inaugurate these facilities this year for the corporation to reap the benefits of sustainable and clean energy solutions,” Teves said.

The NPC supervises 281 SPUG power plants nationwide. It also manages transmission systems in island provinces such as Palawan, Catanduanes, Masbate, Marinduque and Mindoro.
