USDA-FSIS issues public health alert on illegally import Philippine canned goods

The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued a public health alert regarding ready-to-eat meat and poultry products that were illegally imported from the Philippines, a country not eligible to export such products to the US.

The FSIS said it is actively investigating how these products entered the US.

The products subject to the public health alert include various cans of “Argentina brand corned beef,” “Purefoods corned beef,” and “Chunkee corned beef,” as well as a jar of “Lady’s Choice Chicken Spread.”

FSIS said the items were distributed to restaurant and retail locations across several states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia.

The USDA agency said the key concerns include the lack of producing establishment information on the product labels, which were discovered during routine surveillance activities by FSIS at a retailer.

FSIS said there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses related to the consumption of these products, but consumers are advised to avoid consuming or serving them. Retailers have been instructed not to sell these products, it added.

The agency said American consumers who have purchased any of the listed products are urged to double bag and dispose of them to prevent animals from accessing them. The FSIS cannot confirm whether these products were properly handled to control pathogens that could affect domestic livestock and poultry.
