The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has unveiled a new 115-kilovolt switching station to support the power needs of the country’s largest hyperscale data center, VITRO Inc.’s AI-ready facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. The new infrastructure is designed to provide reliable and redundant power to the facility, which has an ultimate power demand of 50 megawatts.
VITRO Inc., a subsidiary of ePLDT — the data center arm of the PLDT Group — is positioning the Sta. Rosa site as a key player in accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and supporting the country’s digital transformation. The new data center is expected to play a pivotal role in sectors such as telecommunications, finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and government services.
Victor Genuino, president and CEO of ePLDT and VITRO Inc., emphasized the strategic importance of the project, saying, “VITRO Sta. Rosa is not just another data center; it’s a facility designed to welcome hyperscalers and accelerate the country’s adoption of AI. Our strong partnership with Meralco is critical as we continue to build world-class facilities that directly support the modernization and progress of the country.”
The switching station’s design incorporates redundancy features to ensure uninterrupted services, with Meralco’s executive vice president and COO, Ronnie Aperocho, adding that the station’s infrastructure guarantees operational continuity for the data center.
Meralco noted that the investment in this facility aligns with the Philippine government’s goal of positioning the country as a key hub for hyperscale industry developments, underscoring the strategic importance of reliable and resilient digital infrastructure.
The announcement comes as the government and industry leaders continue to prioritize the development of digital and AI infrastructure to meet growing demand across various sectors.
