DA unveils South Korea-backed greenhouse in Quezon

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Department of Agriculture (DA) inaugurated a state-of-the-art greenhouse and post-harvest facility in Lucban, Quezon, last Friday, backed by South Korea. The new facility is part of a broader initiative to modernize Philippine agriculture, with 20 greenhouses now operating in Quezon, Laguna, and Nueva Ecija. The projects are aimed at enhancing resilience to climate change and strengthening food security.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. highlighted the role of the Korea Partnership for Innovation of Agriculture (KOPIA), an agricultural development program, in making the facility a reality. KOPIA, under South Korea’s Rural Development Administration, is helping introduce advanced farming techniques, including greenhouse cultivation, to local farmers. These innovations are expected to provide year-round crop production, critical to maintaining food stability amid climate disruptions like El Niño and unpredictable weather patterns.

Tiu Laurel emphasized that the new facilities represent more than just infrastructure, but a shift toward sustainable farming practices that can weather the challenges of a changing climate. The initiative is seen as a significant step toward empowering Filipino farmers and ensuring long-term food security.
