Globe Telecom is helping equip young Filipinos with skills needed to thrive in the evolving world of data and artificial intelligence (AI). Through its “Data and Analytics for Good” initiative, Globe is creating hands-on learning opportunities that blend innovation and education, preparing the next generation of tech leaders to drive positive change.
Recently, the company partnered with Google and AWS to host a series of lectures and hackathons designed for university students. The events, under the theme “Fusion of D.AI.TA,” focused on the transformative potential of Generative AI and data integration in modern applications.
At the heart of the initiative was the “Google Analytics and GenAI Lecture & Vertex AI Hands-on Labs,” where students from eight universities explored AI-driven data platforms like Google BigQuery and Vertex AI. With guidance from Google experts, students gained practical experience in AI tools such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) search and developed innovative solutions during a hackathon using Google’s Gemini AI Agent Builder. Melissa Mae Miranda, a student from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, won the hackathon for her creative use of AI in app development.
The momentum continued with Globe’s “Innovate with Data: AWS PartyRock Battle,” which engaged 148 students from 18 universities across various regions. AWS experts led a workshop on data visualization and machine learning before the hackathon, where participants created AI-generated applications using AWS’s PartyRock platform. The first-place team, from Asia Pacific College, developed a Gen AI app to help Filipino teachers streamline lesson planning.
“Our goal is to inspire students to build careers in data science right here in the Philippines,” said Jenny Echevarria, vice president of Enterprise Data and Strategic Services at Globe. By partnering with industry leaders like Google and AWS, Globe is fostering a future-ready workforce, poised to contribute to the growth of the nation’s digital economy.
