SN Aboitiz Power expands battery storage capacity at Magat hydro plant

Renewable energy developer SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has secured engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreements for the expansion of its battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Magat hydroelectric power plant in Ramon, Isabela.

SNAP signed a deal with GEDI China Energy, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group, to develop the 16-megawatt (MW) Magat BESS Phase 2. This expansion builds on the 24-MW Magat BESS Phase 1, which became operational in January 2024. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2025, with full commercial operations expected by mid-2026.

Joseph Yu, SNAP president and CEO, expressed the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions. “The Magat BESS expansion underscores SNAP Group’s mission to lead in the renewable energy space and accelerate the country’s transition to a more sustainable energy future,” Yu said.

SNAP, a joint venture between Aboitiz Power Corp. and Norwegian renewable energy producer SCATEC ASA, operates other power generation assets, including two hydroelectric plants: the 388-MW Magat plant, which straddles the Isabela-Ifugao border, and the 8.5-MW Maris plant in Isabela.

The Magat BESS expansion is part of SNAP’s broader strategy to enhance grid stability and energy storage capabilities, vital for supporting the country’s growing renewable energy sector.
