    PepsiCo expands waste diversion efforts

PepsiCo Inc.’s Philippine branch is continuing its collaboration with Evergreen Labs Philippines this year, advancing its Loop Lokal plastic waste diversion program aimed at supporting the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law.

The program, launched in 2023, has become a cornerstone of PepsiCo’s sustainability efforts in the Philippines, helping build the infrastructure needed to collect, sort, and upcycle post-consumer plastic waste. A key investment by the company is the upgrade of the materials recovery facility in Biñan City, Laguna, where previously limited operations are being expanded with advanced equipment including a mechanized sorting line and plastic processing machinery.

“This partnership allows us to avoid harmful disposal practices and instead support a model that creates value from waste—benefiting both the environment and local communities,” said Aditya Ahuja, general manager of PepsiCo Foods for Malaysia and the Philippines.

Evergreen Labs has since rolled out the program in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Cebu, Iloilo, and Guimaras, engaging 11 communities and diverting over 180 metric tons of plastic waste. Local partnerships have enabled the plastic to be repurposed into marketable goods like bricks and lumber, generating income and jobs within the communities.

“PepsiCo’s support enables us to develop scalable, community-focused waste solutions that reduce pollution and reinforce local government systems,” said Erica Cardoso, managing director of Evergreen Labs.

The initiative reflects a broader commercial strategy by PepsiCo to align with local environmental regulations while strengthening its corporate responsibility footprint in Southeast Asia’s emerging markets.
