Scam Watch to Meta: Keep FB from being ‘scammers’ playground’

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced a renewed push to curb spammy content across its platforms—but Scam Watch Pilipinas isn’t convinced

Scam Watch Pilipinas argued that this effort barely scratch the surface.

“Facebook has become a playground for scammers,” said Jocel de Guzman, co-founder of Scam Watch Pilipinas. “They take advantage of Meta’s lax content policies and slow moderation. Even now, scam posts are running as paid ads.”

The group highlights the continued spread of fake ads, phishing links, and AI-generated deepfakes, calling Meta’s ad verification process weak and its response times slow.

That’s despite Meta recently removing over two million accounts linked to so-called “pig butchering” scams—sophisticated fraud operations that often involve social engineering and exploitative labor. The company says it’s working with law enforcement and tech partners, but acknowledges scammers are adapting quickly.

Advocates also warned that Meta’s current approach isn’t enough, particularly in vulnerable regions like the Philippines. Scam Watch Pilipinas is calling for government intervention to ensure transparency, regulation, and better protection for users.
