Over 30 firms eye PH rail expansion program as gov’t bets big on mass transit

The government’s push to revamp the public transport system has gained strong momentum after around 30 local and international companies expressed keen interest in joining the nation’s major railway projects. The strong turnout at a recent market engagement conference held at the Asian Development Bank headquarters in Manila signals robust private sector interest in the country’s transport modernization pipeline.

The enthusiasm from top global and domestic firms highlights a pivotal shift in Philippine transport policy toward mass transit as the ultimate remedy for chronic urban congestion. By expanding the railway network beyond Metro Manila into key neighboring provinces like Pampanga, Laguna, and Tarlac, transport officials aim to decentralize economic growth, streamline regional travel, and establish a far more reliable corridor for moving both commuters and goods.

Central to the upcoming development is the North-South Commuter Railway extension to New Clark City, an 18.1-kilometer project designed to stretch the capital region’s transit coverage further north. Beyond physical infrastructure, the government is also focused on bolstering its internal capacity to execute these large-scale builds smoothly, partnering with international consultants to upgrade project management and technical oversight.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized that expanding rail lines is essential to offering faster, more comfortable travel while scaling up train capacity nationwide. Transport officials also noted that the strong participation from international contractors reflects growing confidence in the government’s procurement transparency, positioning public-private collaboration as a primary driver for the country’s long-term mobility goals.
