Marcos, Takaichi eye stronger Philippine-Japan alliance

Defense, maritime security, energy resilience, and economic cooperation will take center stage as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. meets Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during a high-level summit in Japan this week, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The May 26 to 29 visit marks President Marcos’ first state visit to Japan and is seen by Manila as a strategically important opportunity to deepen bilateral ties amid growing regional and global uncertainties.

DFA spokesperson Analyn Ratonel said discussions are expected to focus on enhancing maritime and defense cooperation, boosting trade and investment ties, and expanding collaboration on energy resilience and decarbonization. The two leaders are also set to explore partnerships in emerging and future-oriented industries.

The summit comes as security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific continue to intensify, alongside broader geopolitical concerns including developments in the Middle East and evolving challenges within ASEAN. Regional stability and the rules-based international order are expected to feature prominently in the talks.

Several agreements are anticipated to be announced, particularly in the areas of defense cooperation, investment facilitation, trade, and human resource development.

Beyond the formal summit, President Marcos is scheduled to meet Japanese business leaders to promote investment opportunities in the Philippines and engage with the Filipino community in Japan.

The visit will also include ceremonial events at the Imperial Palace, where President Marcos and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos will be welcomed by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, followed by a state banquet and an exchange of honors.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan, underscoring the long-standing and steadily expanding strategic partnership between the two nations.
