The Makati Business Club said restoring public trust in the Senate now largely depends on the leadership of the Senate President following what it described as the “unprecedented drama and chaos” that marked the chamber’s May 11 session.
The influential business group warned that the Senate’s credibility has been seriously undermined at a crucial political moment, as lawmakers convene as an impeachment court for Vice President Sara Duterte.
MBC stressed that senators are carrying out one of their most important constitutional responsibilities and urged them to place national interest and democratic stability above personal or political agendas.
The group said the burden of restoring the institution’s integrity rests heavily on the Senate President, who serves as the chamber’s head, chief executive officer, and legal representative.
According to MBC, the Senate President must act as the institution’s moral compass, administrative guardian, and public face, warning that public confidence erodes when Senate leadership is perceived as partisan or lacking independence and moral authority.
The business organization also reminded senators that they were elected to serve the public—not personal, political, or business interests—and called on lawmakers to remain guided by the Constitution throughout the impeachment proceedings.
MBC further challenged senators to prioritize long-term democratic stability over short-term political survival, warning that history would ultimately judge their actions during this critical period.
