DICT monitors connectivity post Sarangani Bay quake; Starlink units deployed

Following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Sarangani Bay, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is closely tracking telecom services across affected regions. Globe reported full operations, while Smart remains largely functional with only weak signal issues noted in parts of General Santos City, even after successfully sending emergency alerts. DITO recorded 54 offline sites in Mindanao due to damaged cables and power outages, though it still maintains nearly 96 percent service coverage. Converge reported no network downtime, with some facilities running on backup power as a safety measure.

Disruptions to power and internet access are being felt in General Santos City, South Cotabato, and Koronadal City, while services remain stable in Marawi City, Sultan Kudarat, and North Cotabato. Working with the Office of Civil Defense, DICT is sending three Starlink units to General Santos and priority areas in Sarangani Province to boost emergency communications. The agency continues real-time monitoring and coordination with disaster response bodies and telcos to restore connections and support relief efforts.
