Holcim brings reliable water to La Union

Holcim Philippines has expanded its community sustainability efforts in La Union with the rollout of a new water supply and rainwater harvesting system that is now providing reliable access to water for about 400 households in Barangay Quirino.

The project, developed in partnership with local officials and residents, addresses a long-standing challenge in the community where access to safe and dependable water sources has been limited. Planning and consultations began in the second quarter of last year, with stakeholders working together to design a solution suited to local conditions and needs.

The facility now supplies an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 liters of water daily for household activities such as cooking, cleaning, washing, and sanitation.

The improved water access is expected to reduce residents’ dependence on commercially sourced water, helping lower household expenses while improving health and living conditions.

Barangay Captain Marvin Cardinez said the system also lessens the community’s reliance on groundwater extracted from deep wells and improves water availability for public facilities, extending the project’s benefits beyond individual households.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by private companies to integrate climate resilience and community development into their sustainability programs. By incorporating rainwater harvesting technology, the project promotes more efficient water management while helping communities adapt to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

The water project forms part of a broader strategy of Holcim Philippines to support local communities through sustainable infrastructure investments. The company said collaboration among businesses, local government units, and residents remains critical in addressing basic service gaps and strengthening community resilience.

As climate pressures and water security concerns intensify across many parts of the country, projects such as the Barangay Quirino facility demonstrate how targeted infrastructure investments can deliver immediate social benefits while supporting longer-term environmental sustainability goals.

The company said it will continue pursuing initiatives that contribute to safer, healthier, and more resilient communities nationwide.
