The National Power Corp. (NPC) announced that its Agus and Pulangi hydroelectric facilities in Mindanao will be fully restored and operational by August 20, 2026. Currently, several units are offline due to scheduled maintenance, extended technical work, and emergency repairs, leaving only about 600 megawatts available out of the complex’s total installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Restoration of the six affected units will take place in phases from June 26 through August 20.
NPC president and CEO Jericho Nograles confirmed that renewed operation will meet existing and committed power demand in the region. Beyond repairs, the agency is preparing for the El Niño weather pattern expected from June 2026 to early 2027, putting measures in place to maintain stable generation. It has also launched a major watershed rehabilitation program to improve water flow and long-term efficiency for its hydro plants across Luzon and Mindanao.
For the broader business and energy sector, the return of full capacity reduces reliance on more costly backup power sources, helps stabilize electricity rates, and supports Mindanao’s economic activity. As the state firm also oversees 274 off-grid power plants and transmission systems in key island provinces, its efforts reinforce energy security nationwide, especially in areas not connected to the main grid.
