The great fork heist and other national priorities

At long last, the public can sleep soundly.

The National Capital Region Police Office has announced the arrest of a 43-year-old man accused of attempting to make off with 26 forks and seven silver spoons from a Manila hotel—the estimated value of the alleged loot is P12,658.14.

A press statement was issued. Quotations were gathered. Commendations were dispensed. The suspect was apprehended, medically examined, investigated, and prepared for inquest.

One almost expects a Netflix documentary.

To be clear, theft is theft. Property rights matter. Hotel owners have every right to seek legal remedies. The suspect, as always, is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

However, one cannot help but notice the contrast between the fanfare surrounding the alleged pilfering of cutlery and the far graver public safety concerns that occupy the country today.

Across the Philippines, law enforcement continues to grapple with violent crime, armed attacks, organized criminal activity, and fugitives who remain beyond the reach of authorities. Communities are still processing reports of deadly shootings and disturbing incidents involving violence in and around schools. These are the stories that leave families fearful, not the disappearance of a few forks from a banquet hall.

Which raises an uncomfortable question: Why did this particular arrest merit a polished regional press release?

Public information is not merely about reporting activity. It is also about signaling priorities. Every statement tells citizens what authorities believe deserves public attention.

When a regional police office devotes precious communications resources to a cutlery case, it risks creating the impression—fair or not—that performance is being measured by press releases rather than public impact.

The issue is not the arrest itself. It is the celebration of it.

The recovery of seven spoons is certainly good news for one hotel.

The public, however, is still waiting for bigger victories.
