Kidnap conviction seen lifting investor confidence and tourism

The conviction of seven kidnappers in the abduction of a 78-year-old businesswoman has strengthened the Philippines’ reputation as a safer place to invest and visit, according to the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII), which said swift justice can be as important as economic incentives in attracting business.

FFCCCII President Victor Lim welcomed the Quezon City court’s June 30 ruling sentencing the seven accused to reclusion perpetua without parole, less than a year after the victim was kidnapped in September 2025.

Lim credited the coordinated efforts of the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group and the Department of Justice, saying the speedy resolution demonstrated that the country’s law enforcement and justice institutions can deliver timely and decisive results.

Beyond securing justice for one victim, Lim said the ruling sends a broader signal to investors and tourists who increasingly weigh public safety when deciding where to put capital or spend their holidays.

“Peace and order are fundamental to economic progress,” he said, noting that businesses seek stable and secure operating environments while travelers favor destinations where they feel protected.

He added that successful prosecutions help erase perceptions of impunity that have long weighed on the country’s international image, reinforcing confidence that criminal groups will be held accountable.

Representing 170 Filipino-Chinese business chambers nationwide, the FFCCCII has partnered with authorities through regular dialogues and capacity-building initiatives, including sponsoring Chinese language training for members of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group to strengthen law enforcement capabilities.

Lim said sustaining an aggressive anti-crime campaign will further enhance the country’s competitiveness, arguing that efficient investigations and faster court proceedings should become the norm rather than the exception.

For the business community, the message is straightforward. A stronger rule of law not only protects lives and property but also supports investment, tourism, and long-term economic growth by reinforcing confidence that the Philippines is committed to providing a secure environment for businesses and visitors alike.
