Taiwan has extended USD200,000 (about P12 million) in humanitarian assistance to support relief and recovery efforts for communities devastated by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with the Philippines in disaster response.
The donation was formally turned over on July 3 by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) Representative Ambassador Wallace Chow to the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), represented by Board Member Cherbett Karen Maralit, in a ceremony witnessed by officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Office of Civil Defense.
Chow conveyed the condolences of the Taiwanese government and people to earthquake victims, while praising the resilience and unity shown by affected communities as recovery efforts continue.
Highlighting the close ties between the two neighbors, Chow recalled how hundreds of Filipinos in Taiwan, many of them overseas Filipino workers, volunteered to help residents of Hualien after a devastating typhoon hit his hometown last year. He described the gesture as “Taiwanihan,” a reflection of the shared spirit of mutual aid that has strengthened bilateral relations.
The Taiwanese private sector also stepped in, with the Subic Bay Taiwan Chamber of Commerce donating an additional P360,000 for earthquake relief.
The assistance comes as the Philippines starts rebuilding efforts shift from emergency response to long-term recovery.
The latest donation reinforces a broader pattern of humanitarian engagement of Taiwan that has increasingly complemented economic and people-to-people ties with Manila.
As climate-related disasters and geological hazards become more frequent across the region, disaster cooperation is emerging as another pillar of Taiwan-Philippines relations.
Beyond the financial assistance, the latest aid underscores the value of trusted partnerships that can deliver swift support when calamities strike, while laying the groundwork for stronger collaboration in disaster preparedness, resilience, and recovery.
