The Philippines is set to host its first-ever World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour event, a milestone that will bring the sport’s biggest names to Siargao and place the island firmly on the global surfing map.
Dubbed the Philippines Pro and presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the competition will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 10, with the world’s top male and female surfers battling for crucial World Title points in Stop No. 11 of the 2026 and 2027 Championship Tour seasons.
For Philippine surfing, it is the equivalent of welcoming Formula One to a hometown racetrack.
The tournament also marks a breakthrough for sports tourism, as the Department of Tourism (DOT) looks to capitalize on Siargao’s international appeal and attract more high-value visitors through marquee sporting events.
Beyond the famous barrels of Cloud 9, officials hope visiting fans will discover the island’s beaches, food, culture and nearby attractions, extending tourism spending beyond the competition itself.
The economic ripple is expected to reach hotels, restaurants, transport operators and local businesses, reinforcing how global sporting events can generate lasting benefits long after the winners are crowned.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio said hosting the Championship Tour is a defining moment for Philippine surfing and another step in positioning the country as a destination for world-class sporting events.
Homegrown star John Mark “Marama” Tokong will add local flavor after earning a coveted wildcard berth, giving Filipino fans someone to rally behind as he takes on the sport’s biggest stars on the wave he knows best.
