San Miguel Corp. has grown its Backyard Bukid initiative to nine sites nationwide, marking its first presence in the Visayas as the project shifts from urban farming to boost community food security and livelihoods.
Launched in 2020 during the pandemic to feed stranded personnel at SMC’s Mandaluyong headquarters, it has evolved into an organic farming program run by the San Miguel Foundation. The newest site opened in Albuera, Leyte — the first in the Visayas — with 25 community members growing crops for nutrition and income.
In March, an all-women farming group launched another site in Echague, Isabela, supported by partner SEED Philippines. “Their leadership shows women’s vital role in communities,” said SMC chief Ramon S. Ang.
Across nine sites, over 4,300 kilos of crops have been harvested, benefiting 155 farmers. More sites are coming to Bulacan, Iloilo, and Misamis Oriental, with a Davao del Sur farm launching by year-end. All farmers use organic methods and home-produced natural inputs.
“These farms show what community teamwork can achieve. We will expand further to provide healthier food and steady incomes,” Ang added.
