PXP Energy stake gains from higher Halcon resources

PXP Energy Corp.’s 12.5 percent stake in Service Contract 80 (SC 80) gained a potentially more favorable resource outlook after operator Tetragon Energy Ltd. reported an increase in estimated prospective resources at the Halcon exploration prospect in the Southwest Sulu Sea.

Tetragon disclosed the updated estimate in an announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange dated Sept. 3, according to PXP.

PXP did not disclose the revised resource figures, referring investors to Tetragon’s full ASX announcement for the estimates and accompanying cautionary statements.

The higher estimate improves the outlook for SC 80, but does not represent a discovery or reserves. Prospective resources are yet-to-be-discovered volumes, while reserves are discovered quantities that are commercially recoverable. Further exploration is needed to establish whether Halcon contains recoverable oil or gas.

PXP’s 12.5 percent participating interest gives it exposure to any future exploration and development at Halcon, although the commercial value of that interest will depend on the results of further work and any eventual development decision.

The resource increase provides a positive data point for PXP as it pursues exploration opportunities in Philippine waters, but investors will still need to distinguish geological potential from commercially proven resources.

A prospective resource estimate reflects the volume of hydrocarbons that could potentially be recovered if a discovery is made. It does not mean the presence of oil or gas has been confirmed, nor does it add to a company’s reserves or production.

Tetragon issued the disclosure in its capacity as operator of SC 80, with PXP stressing that the update should be read together with the complete ASX announcement.

For PXP, the development increases the potential upside associated with its SC 80 interest, while leaving the key question unchanged: whether further exploration can turn Halcon’s prospective resources into a confirmed, commercially recoverable discovery.

PXP is an upstream oil and gas company incorporated in the Philippines and listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange.
