Long before budget flights and remote work made moving abroad a breeze, a brave crew of Filipinos packed up, headed to Spain and Andorra, and essentially wrote the manual on surviving Europe.
The Philippine Embassy in Madrid recently tipped its hat to ten trailblazing Filipinos—who boast between 32 and 51 years of residency—at the 2026 Gawad Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier awards. Marking 79 years of diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Spain, Philippine Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier honored the group for laying down the community groundwork today’s expats take for granted.
“Your sacrifices built the path we walk today. Your legacy will guide the generations that follow,” Lhuillier noted.
Arriving as early as 1975—collectively logging a staggering 423 years abroad—these pioneers faced culture shocks, grueling red tape, and heavy doses of homesickness without the comfort of modern video calls or balikbayan box tracking.
Established in 2018, the awards celebrate those who turned personal grit into a community safety net. Today, thanks to these early risk-takers who braved the continent first, succeeding generations of Filipino migrants enjoy built-in support systems, vibrant cultural spaces, and a much smoother road to conquering Europe.
