Aurora Gaming proved that the Northern Lights shine brightest when the odds are darkest, capturing its first Mobile Legends Professional League Philippines (MPL PH) championship after a long wait with a comeback victory over Team Falcons PH on Sunday.
At the Philippine Sports Arena, Aurora completed a six-game turnaround to claim the crown, transforming what looked like a long shot into a championship run worthy of esports folklore.
The script, however, was hardly written in the stars. Aurora finished fourth in the group stage before falling 3-2 to Team Falcons in the upper bracket. Its route back to the grand finals required another nerve-racking seven-game battle, this time against defending champion Team Liquid PH, whom Aurora edged out 4-3.
Apparently, Aurora prefers its road to glory with a generous serving of suffering.
The grand finals initially suggested more heartbreak. Team Falcons took a 2-1 lead, leaving Aurora staring down another near miss. But the crucial fourth-game draft changed the series’ complexion. Aurora found its footing, seized the next three games, and closed out the championship at 4-2, proving that sometimes the smartest moves happen before the first skill is even cast.
Leading the charge was 18-year-old Jan Dominic “Domeng” del Mundo, who earned Finals Most Valuable Player honors. At an age when many are still figuring out adulthood, Domeng was busy helping an organization figure out how to become champions.
The victory also sends Aurora to the M8 World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey, scheduled for December 17, 2026, to January 23, 2027. Team Falcons PH will join them as another Philippine representative, ensuring the country has two contenders on the global stage.
With a USD150,000 prize pool, the tournament began in late August under the stewardship of Moonton and Mineski Global. Now, Aurora has its first crown—and a reminder that in esports, an early stumble is merely another plot twist.
