Metrobank earns P36.3B as loans drive growth

Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank) grew its net income to P36.3 billion in the first nine months of 2026, as a 13-percent expansion in loans, improving lending margins, and stronger fee income sustained earnings growth despite an uncertain economic environment.

The bank’s net interest income rose 12 percent to P102.7 billion from a year earlier, while net interest margin improved to 3.9 percent from 3.7 percent, reflecting better returns from its lending business.

Gross loans expanded by 13 percent year-on-year, outpacing industry growth, as demand from both corporate and household borrowers remained firm.

Institutional loans grew 14 percent, driven by continued investment spending and higher working capital requirements among businesses. Consumer loans increased 8.9 percent, supported by credit card and mortgage lending.

Deposits reached P2.5 trillion, with low-cost current and savings accounts (CASA) accounting for 61.2 percent of the total. The bank’s loan-to-deposit ratio stood at 83.8 percent, indicating sufficient funding capacity to support further loan expansion.

Fee and trust income climbed 6.7 percent to P14.9 billion, helping cushion the impact of volatile market conditions on trading income.

Operating expenses reached P64.8 billion, reflecting continued investments in personnel and technology to strengthen the bank’s capabilities and customer services.

Metrobank also maintained relatively strong asset quality, with its non-performing loan (NPL) ratio at 1.9 percent, well below the industry’s 3.4 percent. Its NPL coverage stood at 131.8 percent, providing a buffer against potential deterioration in borrowers’ ability to repay amid weaker economic conditions.

Restructured loans remained minimal at 0.3 percent of total loans, compared with the industry average of 1.9 percent.

Total assets reached P3.7 trillion, while shareholders’ equity increased to P410 billion. The bank’s capital adequacy ratio stood at 14.5 percent and its common equity tier 1 ratio at 13.8 percent, both comfortably above regulatory minimum requirements. Its liquidity coverage ratio was also strong at 141 percent.

“The resiliency and strength of the Bank come from the Bank’s robust fundamentals and prudent approach in managing its core businesses. With the economic landscape still uncertain, we will continue to invest in our capabilities to better serve our customers, while managing risks prudently,” Metrobank President Fabian Dee said.
