Surigao City – The enduring friendship and diplomatic ties between Japan and the Philippines took center stage during the 82nd commemoration of the historic Battle of Surigao Strait, jointly organized by the City of Surigao and the Province of Dinagat Islands. Representing the Japanese government, Naval Attaché Commander Wada Koji attended the event and delivered a message from Japanese Ambassador Kitagaw Katsuro, underscoring the deep bond that has grown between the two nations in the decades since the Second World War.
The solemn ceremony brought together key officials including Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo P. Demerey, Surigao City Mayor Pablo Dumlao, and Lieutenant Colonel Noel Young, Assistant Defense Attaché of the Australian Embassy to the Philippines, alongside war veterans, Japanese nationals, and local residents. In addition to remarks from distinguished guests, the observance included traditional acts of remembrance such as the laying of wreaths and the lighting of the memorial flame, symbols of respect for all those who took part in the historic conflict.
In a moving tribute, a special wreath was also placed at sea over the waters where the Japanese battleship Fuso sank during the battle, honoring those who lost their lives on both sides. The gathering served not only to remember history but also to celebrate how former adversaries have become close friends and partners, working together for peace, understanding, and shared progress in the region today.
