Passenger, air cargo surcharge rates unchanged in June at Level 6

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) on Tuesday announced that passenger and cargo fuel surcharges remain at Level 6 in June for the fourth month in a series.

In an advisory, the CAB said passenger and cargo fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights stay the same from 1 to 30 June this year.

Under Level 6 of the passenger fuel surcharge matrix, airlines are allowed to collect a surcharge ranging from P185 to P665 on domestic flights and from P610.37 to P4,538.40 on international flights.

As for the fuel surcharge on cargo flights, the CAB said airlines are allowed to charge from P0.95 to P2.78 per kilogram on domestic flights under Level 6 and from P3.14 to P23.33 per kilogram on international flights.

“Airlines wishing to impose or collect fuel surcharge must file its application with CAB on or before the effectivity period, with fuel surcharge rates not exceeding the above-stated level,” the regulator said.

Fuel surcharges, the CAB said, are an optional fee imposed and collected by airlines to recover the cost of fuel and arrest losses caused by upward spikes in fuel costs.

Fuel surcharges do not form part of the basic airfare and may be reduced or removed altogether depending on the price of jet fuel in the market.

According to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Jet Fuel Price Monitor, jet fuel average $100.57 per barrel as of 17 May this year, down 7.1 percent from April and lower by 10.5 percent compared to the same period last year.
