AGI putting up $300 million casino in Boracay

Businessman Andrew Tan’s Alliance Global Group Inc. is spending USD300 million to put up an integrated resort and casino in Boracay island.

Kevin Andrew L. Tan, AGI president and CEO, said the project is carried out by the Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. and should start operating by the end of next year having planned the project long before.

“It’s not going to be very big. It’s a boutique casino because we don’t want a big structure in Boracay. We want it to be just right for the island. We’re having a more sustainable design so it will be right for the island,” Tan told reporters.

The Boracay World Resorts, as the property is called, should boost the island’s appeal to tourists from around the world even more, Tan said.

AGI owns the 80-hectare Fairways and Bluewater Boracay, which is the island’s only 18-hole, par 72 Graham Marsh-designed golf course.

“Our group currently owns 150-hectares called the Boracay New Coast (which includes Fairways). In this area, we have an 18-hole golf course and our own one-kilometer pilot beach, also close to 2,000 hotel room keys,” he said.

Travellers, he said, also built a private resort with two standing villas and hotel suites.

Tan earlier said the company is spending $400 million for an integrated resort and casino in Cebu called the Mactan World Resort.

“It will be the latest integrated resort to rise in our Cebu Township located just 20 minutes away from the Mactan Cebu International Airport, the country’s second busiest international gateway,” he said of the USD400 million tourism development project targeted for completion by 2026.

When completed, the gaming and leisure hub will provide more than 5,000 new jobs to residents of the island.
