Southeast Asia faces surge in web threats as digital economy grows, Kaspersky reports

Southeast Asia is seeing an alarming rise in web-based threats as businesses navigate an increasingly digital economy, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. In the first half of 2024, Kaspersky blocked over 26 million web attacks in the region, averaging nearly 147,000 daily threats. Malaysia topped the list, facing over 19.6 million attacks, followed by Indonesia with 3.2 million.

As the region embraces rapid digitalisation, vulnerabilities in businesses’ online systems have become prime targets for cybercriminals, resulting in potential disruptions to supply chains, financial sectors, and critical infrastructure like healthcare and energy. “The increased reliance on digital platforms broadens the attack surface, giving cybercriminals more opportunities to exploit weaknesses,” said Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Kaspersky urges businesses to stay vigilant, adopting robust cybersecurity measures such as real-time monitoring, regular security audits, and advanced endpoint protection. For businesses with limited IT resources, Kaspersky recommends tools like Kaspersky Small Office Security and managed services like Kaspersky MDR to ensure continuous, high-level protection.

With governments increasingly focusing on cybersecurity regulation, businesses must continue prioritising their digital defences to safeguard operations against sophisticated attacks, including AI-driven threats.
