Converge launches “Project PIGLET” to boost digital privacy awareness among young Filipinos

Converge ICT Solutions Inc., a leader in fiber broadband and technology, has launched an advocacy program aimed at promoting digital literacy and privacy awareness among Filipino students. Through its Corporate Governance and Data Privacy (CGDP) Group, Converge unveiled Project PIGLET (Privacy Integration through Guided Learning of Emerging Technologies), a campaign designed to educate young learners on safeguarding personal information in the digital world.

To kickstart the project, Converge partnered with Francisco Legaspi Memorial School (FLMS) in Pasig where it hosted a child-friendly event for students in Grades 2 to 6. The launch included an interactive storytelling session, highlighting the importance of responsible online behavior and the risks of oversharing on social media.

“The internet presents both opportunities and threats for children. Today’s kids are exposed to technology at a very young age, so it is essential to educate them about online safety early on,” said Converge senior vice president and corporate compliance and data protection officer, Laurice Esteban-Tuason. “We hope to instill in them the vigilance needed to protect their personal data from digital threats.”

The session, which involved students, teachers, and parents, introduced the story of the Astro Kids, a group of space adventurers navigating the “Internet Universe.” Along their journey, they encounter deceptive monsters that trick them into revealing sensitive personal information, such as names, birthdays, and addresses. With the help of their guide, Captain Conrad, the Astro Kids learn how to identify and avoid these online dangers, reinforcing the importance of skepticism and responsible online behavior.

Converge’s initiative is part of a broader effort to build awareness of digital privacy risks, especially among the younger generation. The company plans to expand the program next year, reaching more schools nationwide and engaging students of varying academic levels.

“Our goal is to empower the next generation to navigate the digital world safely,” said Esteban-Tuason. “With the constant evolution of technology, it’s crucial that we stay ahead of the curve in teaching digital literacy and privacy.”

In line with its commitment to online safety, Converge has previously partnered with the UK-based Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) to combat the distribution of child sexual abuse material, reinforcing its ongoing efforts to create secure online spaces for Filipinos.
