DA bans livestock imports from Japan amid lumpy skin disease outbreak

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has enforced a temporary ban on the importation of live cattle, buffalo, and their products from Japan, following the outbreak of the lumpy skin disease (LSD). Issued under Memorandum Order No. 57, the ban aims to shield local cattle and water buffalo populations from the potentially devastating virus, which can lead to severe health complications or even death in affected animals.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said the decision is critical to preventing the spread of the viral disease, which causes symptoms such as fever, skin nodules, weight loss, and fluid retention. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the outbreak on 15 November 2024, in Maebaru, Fukuoka, and reported it to the World Organization for Animal Health.

The ban extends to all live cattle and buffalo, as well as products like unpasteurized milk, embryos, skin, and semen for artificial insemination. However, certain items such as skeletal muscle meat, pasteurized milk, and other processed goods will still be allowed if they meet Philippine health and safety standards.

This precautionary measure underscores the Philippines’ commitment to protecting its livestock industry from external health threats.
