Empowering local communities: TPB’s successful Albay tourism program

The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines has concluded the Albay leg of its community-based tourism (CBT) marketing enhancement program, held from 6 to 10 December. This initiative, organized in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Albay and DOT Region V, aimed to equip local tourism stakeholders with skills in digital marketing, content creation, and sustainable tourism practices.

The program visited seven communities across Albay, each showcasing unique cultural and eco-tourism offerings. Participants learned about traditional crafts such as ceramics from PHILCERAMICS in Tiwi, cutlery-making by the Tabaco Cutlery Makers Association, and abaca weaving by the Malilipot Weavers. Additionally, eco-tourism initiatives like river tours in Jovellar and farm experiences by LET’S GO were highlighted, offering a deeper connection to the region’s natural beauty.

Cultural highlights included cooking demonstrations of Bicolano dishes like Tinutungan na Manok and Pinangat, giving participants a taste of the local flavors. To support the program, a fundraising concert, Musika Para Sa Bikol: Himig ng Bayanihan, raised funds for typhoon relief efforts in the region.

This successful program is part of TPB’s broader mission to empower local communities and promote sustainable tourism. TPB plans to expand the CBT program in 2025, with workshops scheduled for other regions, including Zamboanga, Davao, and Cordillera, further strengthening the Philippines as an inclusive and eco-conscious travel destination.
