Aboitiz Power Corp. said Wednesday that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Therma Power-Visayas, Inc. (TPVI), received confirmation from the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) regarding the disconnection of its power assets in Naga City, Cebu.
Delinked from the power grid are TVPI’s 44.6-megaWatt Naga Oil-Fired Power Plant and the 0.440 MW Black Start Diesel Engine Generating Unit were officially isolated from the grid as of March 31.
Aboitiz had earlier decided to decommission the power plants due to technical and operational challenges posed by the aging diesel engines.
The affected facilities are part of the Naga Power Plant Complex located in Barangay Colon. TPVI took ownership of the complex on July 16, 2018, after acquiring it from Salcon Power Corp. Since the acquisition, TPVI has invested in rehabilitation and maintenance efforts to ensure operational readiness and reliability.
The impact of the disconnection on TPVI’s operations and its future role in the Visayas grid remains to be seen, though the company is expected to recalibrate its energy portfolio in response to evolving regulatory and market conditions.
