    Cyclone Crising, Habagat cause ₱52.7M in farm losses

    The combined impact of Tropical Cyclone Crising and the Southwest Monsoon (habagat) has caused initial agricultural damage amounting to ₱52.74 million, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA). The losses affect 2,099 farmersover 2,466 hectares, resulting in 2,147 metric tons of lost produce.

    The rice sector bore the brunt of the damage, accounting for ₱50.72 million, with 2,109 MT lost across 2,457 hectares. High-value crops suffered ₱1.73 million in damage, while livestock losses, including poultry and cattle, were valued at ₱231,000. Corn losses were minimal at ₱62,300.

    The affected regions include Cagayan Valley, Mimaropa, and Western Visayas, with assessments ongoing and more damage expected. Flooded rice fields, livestock areas, and even the National Food Authority (NFA) warehouse in Mindoro were reported. Road closures in several regions may also disrupt the delivery of farm goods.

    In response, DA Undersecretary Roger Navarro directed swift mobilization of aid. The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) has begun damage assessments to fast-track insurance claims, while the DA is offering support including seeds, livestock, zero-interest loans, and rehabilitation assistance through its Quick Response Fund.

    Meanwhile, Meralco restored power to 1,600 customers in Quezon City following a billboard collapse caused by strong winds from the same weather systems.
