MGen launches 49 MW battery energy storage project in Cebu

Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen), the power generation arm of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), on Monday announced the pursuit of a 49-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Toledo, Cebu, designed to strengthen grid stability and support the country’s clean energy transition program.

Expected to be done in two phases, with an initial 25 MW operational by 2026 and the remainder by 2027, the project will enhance power reliability in areas with fluctuating renewable energy supply. MGen said the BESS will help balance energy demand and supply, particularly during peak and off-peak periods.

“This project is part of our broader commitment to strengthen the reliability of the grid and accelerate the country’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future,” said MGen president and CEO Emmanuel Rubio.

This marks MGen’s second BESS initiative, following the massive MTerra Solar project in Nueva Ecija, which includes a 4,500 MWh storage system paired with a 3,500 MW solar facility—set to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage project upon completion.

MGen renewable energy arm MGreen is also expanding its solar portfolio, targeting an additional 85.2 MW this year with new developments in Isabela and Rizal.
