Cebu BRT pilot run set for September

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) confirmed on Wednesday that pilot operations of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (Cebu BRT) will launch in September, marking a major milestone for urban transport in the province. The system is expected to significantly ease daily commutes for around 70,000 passengers.

Transportation secretary Vince Dizon announced that three key stations—Fuente, Cebu Normal University, and Cebu South Bus Terminal—will be operational for the pilot phase. “We are already expediting the construction of other BRT stations so more areas and more commuters can be reached,” Dizon said.

The move follows a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who ordered the immediate start of pilot operations and accelerated completion of the remaining BRT infrastructure to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion.

The Cebu BRT holds commercial and corporate significance, especially with its long-term plan to include 13 stations and 62 bus stops under Phases 2A and 3A of the project, starting from the South Road Properties to Talamban. A bus depot and feeder terminal is also in development, enhancing the city’s mobility network and supporting future investments in the region.

Construction of the Cebu Capitol station, currently undergoing design revision, will follow the pilot phase. Dizon credited the Cebu provincial government for supporting the project and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to completing it before the end of President Marcos’ term in 2028.
