DA rolls out cold storage in Zambales

The Department of Agriculture (DA) rolled out a comprehensive agricultural support package for farmers and fisherfolk in Zambales, highlighted by a P35-million modular cold storage facility set for completion by early 2026.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., representing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., led the turnover of hybrid seeds, farm machinery—including tractors and irrigation systems—and deployed a mobile soil laboratory to help optimize fertilizer use and reduce production costs.

Livestock and aquaculture sectors also received a boost, with the distribution of goats, cattle, disinfectants, and housing modules to livestock growers. Fisherfolk were granted a 62-footer boat, with five more on the way, along with tilapia and catfish fingerlings to support aquaculture production.

In partnership with Zambales Rep. Jay Khonghun and Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., the DA committed to deliver 150 greenhouse units equipped with drip irrigation to support high-value crops such as bell pepper, tomato, ginger, and carrots, targeting markets in Clark, Subic, and Metro Manila.

The cold storage facility is expected to reduce post-harvest losses and boost farmers’ income. “Zambales is a key pillar of our agriculture sector,” said Tiu Laurel. “With these programs, we aim to boost your productivity, increase your income, and strengthen your livelihood.”
