Kaspersky warns of rising deepfake threat, urges swift registration

Global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has warned Filipinos of the growing danger posed by deepfake technology and urged the government to implement stronger legislation to combat this emerging cyber threat.

Sam Yan, Kaspersky’s head of sales for Asia emerging countries, emphasized that deepfakes have evolved from entertainment novelties into serious cyber risks. He warned that cybercriminals are now using the technology to deceive, exploit trust, and spread misinformation online.

“These manipulated videos can harm individuals and businesses alike. As deepfake tools become more accessible, public vigilance and awareness are more crucial than ever,” said Yan.

The warning comes as the Philippines’ Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) raised concern over the surge of deepfake pornography, following a Senate testimony by a popular actress who fell victim to such abuse. Authorities suspect many of the videos originate overseas, often linked to organized crime and online scams.

Heng Lee, Kaspersky’s head of government affairs and public policy for Asia Pacific, called for a “holistic societal response,” including public education and advanced detection technologies.

Citing studies, Lee noted that only 25 percent of people can accurately identify deepfakes, despite most believing they can. “This highlights how easily anyone can be fooled,” he said. “While laws and technology are vital, individual awareness remains our strongest defense.”
