PH, Japan forge clean energy pact

The Philippines and Japan have signed a cooperation deal to strengthen clean energy initiatives, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced Tuesday.

The agreement, formalized through a memorandum of cooperation (MOC), was signed on October 17 during the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting in Malaysia. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Philippine DOE will spearhead the partnership.

Under the MOC, both countries will collaborate on renewable energy, energy storage, grid integration, hydrogen, ammonia, LNG, and carbon capture. The partnership aims to enhance energy security, accelerate low-carbon development, and support the Philippines’ transition to clean energy.

The initiative also includes capacity building, knowledge exchange, pilot projects, and policy dialogues, while promoting clean energy investments and skills development.

METI pledged full support to the Philippines’ energy transition through the Asia Energy Transition Initiative. The cooperation takes effect immediately and will run for four years, with possible extension.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the deal reflects the Philippines’ commitment to climate action and economic resilience, calling it “a long-term investment in a sustainable future.”
