Telco taps new laser tech to boost broadband service

Globe Telecom is rolling out Free Space Optics (FSO), a laser-based technology that delivers fiber-like internet speeds without the need for cables.

Through its shared services unit, Fiber Infrastructure and Network Services Inc. (FINSI), Globe has partnered with Singapore-based Transcelestial Technologies to deploy the solution across the Philippines. FSO uses laser beams to transmit data through the air, allowing for fast and reliable connections, even in areas where laying fiber is difficult. The technology is seen as a key tool for expanding broadband and 5G-ready networks.

Globe and Transcelestial signed an agreement in August 2025 to accelerate the use of wireless laser communication nationwide. The rollout will feature Transcelestial’s Centauri devices for last-mile connections, mobile backhaul, and event-based network needs. Globe is also testing Transcelestial’s Legolas long-distance laser links, capable of transmitting data up to 15 kilometers, with full deployment possible in 2026.

FSO has already been proven in pilot tests in the Visayas and Mindanao, and at major events like the 2024 Philippine Arena gathering, where the technology supported Globe’s mobile cell sites with high-speed internet.

“Free Space Optics is no longer a pilot for Globe. It is now one of our standard transport solutions,” said Gerhard P. Tan, senior director and head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe. He added that the technology will help Globe strengthen mobile backhaul and deliver faster internet to more Filipinos.
