Globe Telecom has partnered with Nokia to launch commercial 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology in the Philippines, delivering fiber-like internet speeds without the need for physical cables.
The new service can reach speeds of up to 4.3 Gbps, enabling faster broadband, improved enterprise productivity, and more reliable connectivity for mission-critical operations. Field tests in Zamboanga City showed strong performance even over long distances and challenging terrain. Globe recorded 4.3 Gbps at 2.1 km, while another site nearly 9 km awaystill reached close to 1 Gbps.
The Philippine Marines are the first to use the technology, relying on Globe’s 5G mmWave to enhance communication for security and public service. Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 Commander Lt. Col. Nepthalie C. Papa thanked Globe for strengthening connectivity in difficult environments.
Globe said the successful deployment with the Marines shows the technology’s potential to support essential operations and drive the country’s digital transition. “We’re always pushing the limits of connectivity,” said Gerhard Tan, Globe’s senior director for technology strategy and innovations.
5G mmWave sites are now active in Zamboanga City, Quezon City, and Rizal, with broader rollout planned as more compatible devices enter the market. Globe says the technology can benefit communities, government, and businesses—supporting everything from high-speed home broadband to private 5G networks for automation and secure operations.
