The Department of Energy (DOE) said Monday that electricity has been restored to around 4 million of the 4.8 million homes and businesses affected by Typhoons Tino and Uwan. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said teams continue to work around the clock under President Marcos’ directive to speed up restoration. Power for the remaining 800,000 customers is expected to return “in the coming days,” with safety as the top priority.
In a separate announcement, the DOE said it has signed a memorandum of agreement with several Metro Manila local governments to adopt wide-ranging energy-efficiency and renewable-energy programs. The initiative, called Solar Solutions for Government, aims to turn public buildings into energy-efficient facilities through retrofitting, solar panel installations, and other cost-saving measures.
The DOE said the project will help cut electricity use, modernize public infrastructure, and free up savings that LGUs can redirect to services such as education, healthcare, disaster preparedness, and social welfare.
The cities that signed the agreement include Manila, Pasig, Taguig, Quezon City, San Juan, Valenzuela, Mandaluyong, and Navotas. The DOE hopes this partnership will serve as a model for other LGUs nationwide.
