Corruption is an economic threat – Ombudsman

Governance and transparency dominated Day 2 of the Pilipinas Conference 2025 as Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla declared that economic stability begins with honest and accountable leadership.

Remulla told leaders from government, business, and the diplomatic community that investors look beyond numbers and examine whether rules are followed and public funds are protected. He warned that trust is “fragile” and that corruption remains an economic threat.

In his first 46 days, Remulla said he has reopened SALN access, backed live-streamed Ombudsman proceedings, and intensified probes in high-risk sectors like infrastructure and procurement. He noted that flood-control corruption cases have already been filed before the Sandiganbayan.

Stratbase Institute president Dindo Manhit added that 91 percent of CEOs believe the country is failing to curb corruption, which raises business costs and weakens competitiveness.

Now in its 10th year, the Pilipinas Conference continues to push for a Philippines defined by accountability, stability, and investor confidence.
