SMC expands Cebu relief, joins major river cleanup drive

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) is increasing its support for typhoon-affected communities in Cebu. Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang announced during a recent visit that another round of food aid will be distributed by December, following an earlier deployment of employee-volunteers who handed out thousands of relief packs across the province.

Ang joined distributions for SMC employees and nearby communities that helped clear Mahiga Creek, which sits between Cebu and Mandaue cities. Additional gift packs were provided in Barangay Subangdaku, close to one of the company’s plants. He called on more volunteers to take part in the December rollout to reach households still recovering from Typhoon Tino.

Ang was in Cebu to attend the government’s launch of “Oplan Kontra Baha: Metro Cebu,” led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The program brings together national agencies, local governments, and private sector partners to address flooding.

As part of the initiative, SMC will contribute heavy equipment and personnel—at no cost to the government—to help clean and rehabilitate eight waterways in Cebu City, Mandaue, Talisay, Liloan, and Consolacion. The company will use the same large-scale river rehabilitation methods from its Better Rivers PH program, which has removed millions of tons of waste and silt from major rivers in Luzon.
