CUMC becomes first Mindanao hospital fully powered by renewable energy

Capitol University Medical Center (CUMC), one of Mindanao’s largest private hospitals, has become the region’s first medical facility to run entirely on renewable energy. The shift follows a new supply deal with First Gen Corp., the country’s leading renewable energy provider.

Under the agreement signed last month, First Gen will deliver 900 kilowatts of geothermal power to meet the electricity needs of the 200-bed hospital, including its Kidney Institute and other specialty centers. The power will come from the Mt. Apo Geothermal Plant in Cotabato, operated by First Gen’s subsidiary, Energy Development Corp.

CUMC president Dr. Rosalinda Deleste said the hospital is proud to be the first in Mindanao to be powered directly by Mindanao-sourced geothermal energy, noting that the move supports both environmental protection and community well-being.

The hospital is sourcing its power through the government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which allows large electricity users to choose 100 percent renewable energy. Geothermal energy, which provides steady 24/7 power, is seen as particularly suitable for hospitals and industries that require reliable supply.

First Gen chief customer engagement officer Carlo Vega said supporting CUMC’s shift to clean power aligns with the company’s mission to help customers decarbonize.

First Gen currently operates more than 1,700 megawatts of renewable capacity nationwide, including geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro plants. In Mindanao, the company also runs a mini-hydro facility in Bukidnon and is developing two more run-of-river hydro projects in Libona, Bukidnon, and along the Cagayan de Oro River.
