PH, Canada eye closer farm ties at Manila forum

The Philippines is pushing a four-year plan to modernize its agriculture sector, focusing on better infrastructure, logistics, and irrigation, according to Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa at the “Canada-in-Asia: Momentum Manila” event. Speaking on behalf of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., De Mesa said reducing post-harvest losses is central to improving productivity and food security.

He highlighted high-value crops—such as potatoes, coffee, cacao, and dairy—as key areas for deeper cooperation with Canada, noting the country’s strong expertise in seed potato development. These commodities will anchor the Philippines’ proposed project lineup with Canada in 2026.

De Mesa stressed the need to diversify beyond rice. “For our farmers to rise above poverty, we must invest in high-value commodities that offer greater income,” he said.

Event host Chris Ilagan said agriculture now carries major economic and geopolitical importance, adding that stronger Canada-Philippines cooperation is crucial for building resilient food systems.

De Mesa said the Philippines is ready to expand collaboration with Canada, particularly in technology transfer, cold-chain and post-harvest systems, joint R&D on climate-resilient crops, farmer training, and efforts to promote Philippine products in Canadian and global markets.
