Central bank cautions public on BSP-linked scams

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has warned the public to stay alert against fraudulent schemes that misuse the BSP’s name, logo, and even the names and signatures of its officials.

The central bank said scammers are circulating fake documents and offering financial products and services that are falsely presented as approved or endorsed by the BSP.

According to the BSP, these schemes often rely on falsified papers such as assurance letters, loan contracts, confirmations of beneficiary banks, and other documents related to loans, deposits, fund transfers, investments, insurance, or credit cards.

Fraudsters claim these papers come from the BSP to gain trust, then pressure victims to share personal information like bank details and passwords or to pay advance fees, often with an urgent tone.

The BSP stressed that it does not authorize any individual or company to collect fees for supposed anti-money laundering clearance, taxes, insurance, or similar charges.

It also reminded the public that legitimate regulators, banks, and law enforcement agencies do not ask for sensitive information through unsolicited calls, emails, or text messages.

The central bank advised the public to be cautious of offers promising low-interest loans allegedly guaranteed by the BSP, urgent demands for payments to release funds, and documents that misuse the BSP’s name.

Warning signs also include poor grammar, misspellings, and incorrect logos or agency names. The BSP urged anyone who receives suspicious messages or documents to ignore them, avoid sharing any personal or financial information, and report the incident immediately to the BSP.

Those who believe their accounts have been compromised are advised to contact their bank or e-money issuer right away and may also report the matter to the Philippine National Police or the National Bureau of Investigation.
