Aboitiz boosts airport safety, resilience in Visayas

Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) has rolled out a slate of safety, emergency, and operational upgrades at Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA) and Laguindingan International Airport (LIA), reinforcing reliability at two of the country’s busiest provincial gateways.

The improvements cover the Philippines’ sixth- and ninth-busiest airports, both now operated by AIC Airports following the company’s takeover in mid-2025. The initiatives were implemented in close coordination with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), and concerned local government units.

At Laguindingan, AIC upgraded the airport’s fire detection and alarm system, strengthening early hazard identification and enabling faster response and evacuation during emergencies. The enhanced system also expands fire monitoring coverage across critical airport facilities, reducing operational risk and downtime.

At Bohol-Panglao, the company conducted comprehensive technical assessments of key firefighting infrastructure, including pump engine-driven starters, the fire pump house, and booster pumps. These checks were designed to ensure equipment reliability under crisis conditions and minimize the risk of system failure during emergencies.

Beyond emergency systems, AIC also addressed environmental and passenger-comfort concerns at BPIA. The airport’s sewage treatment plant was cleaned to ensure safe, compliant waste disposal, while ventilation and air-conditioning units underwent maintenance to improve air quality, passenger comfort, and overall terminal ambience.

The upgrades coincide with the “Safe Skies & Sustainable Future for All” theme of International Civil Aviation Day on December 7 and represent some of the earliest tangible outcomes of the DOTr and CAAP’s public-private partnership push to modernize regional airports.

“Our commitment goes beyond infrastructure—it’s about making every journey safer, more reliable, and more world-class,” said AIC President and CEO Cosette V. Canilao, adding that the projects support the long-term goal of boosting tourism, trade, and regional competitiveness.

Under multi-year concession agreements awarded in 2024, AIC is pursuing short- to medium-term modernization of both airports, with further projects planned, including terminal restructuring, expansion, and capacity upgrades to meet rising passenger demand.
